Are you with it? Here are the trends for 2020…
January 23, 2020

As décor divas, "Queen" B and Jana always have their noses to the ground, sniffing out the latest trends as they take the design world by storm. Sometimes they even amaze themselves at how hot they are when it comes to spotting a new "thing" before the rest of the world. It's nice being ahead of the curve, rather than just having curves! And legs, of course.
So how do our delectable DD décor dynamos manage to keep us all up to date with what's happening in the big wide world out there? After all, Hoedspruit is not known for its sense of style and savoir faire, unless you are really into khaki, bakkies and men in shorts.
Enter Lidewij Edelkoort, doyenne of all things yet to pass, mystic soothsayer of trends yet to come and forecaster par excellence… She creates trend books almost two years ahead that the worlds of fashion and design use to shape the way we live our lives.
So without further ado, thanks to Lidewij (don't ask us how to pronounce it) and our very own DD dames, here's what's "in" for 2020…

Jungle fever:
Bring the green inside! Indoor spaces are going to be transformed with house plants styled into miniature jungles, using large leafed species combined with more delicate fronds and leaves. The focus is on the foliage rather than the flowers. It all boils down to grounding yourself in nature, connecting to the organic, both indoors and out. This is the underlying theme governing décor and design this year and beyond…

Rough diamonds:
Materials will be edgy and rugged with a raw, unpolished look and feel rather than an overworked, perfect finish. Think diamonds in the rough, with concrete, wood and ceramics with a slightly unworked or less than perfect look and metals with a patina rather than a smooth gloss. Things that look lived in, used and hand-made will be on trend, celebrating the tactile energy of our living spaces.

Earthy kit:
Grey is so last year, darlings. Terracotta is most definitely the new black and colour palettes are full of rich, earthy tones and LOTS of browns! In fact, brown is the neutral of choice in all things, from woods to textiles. Burnt browns, clay colours, rich umbers, blushing fleshy tones and brick reds are all de rigeur. Think rustic, with lots of androgenous earthy, muddy hues.

Colourful comeback:
Colour is being brought back into the home. Standouts include bright yellow and pink, with lots of textiles and small accessories that pop against their settings. Pastels will still be cool and will play a role in softening spaces.

Less is more:
It's time to declutter and integrate your living and working spaces! This year will see bedrooms become more like living rooms, where people gather to watch movies and spend time together. The focus will be on creating atmosphere in these spaces with accessories and making them reflect who we are and our connection to the planet we live on. Staging will be huge, with highly stylised interiors showing off individual items in minimalised spaces.

Bohemian rhapsody:
Yes - "boho" is back! So let's get seriously unconventional and do things a little differently this year! Take things down a notch by lowering couches and tables, sitting on cushions on the floor to properly ground ourselves. Create dining and lounging spaces that connect to the earth using warm wood tones and organic materials. Go back to nature in style and become nomadic with rich tribal prints and textiles.

Back in March of 2020, Bianca and Jana were dusting off their Fez’s and grabbing the pashminas out of storage in preparation to Rock the Casbah! However, as we all know and vividly remember - with March, came the eventual Covid shutdown, and instead of frolicking down the Moroccan streets, we all shut ourselves inside and watched the days tick by… 3 Years later, and now we can finally say - with conviction - that they’re going to Morocco at the start of September! This blog, filled with excitement and curiosity about all the weird and wonderful curios they might find, and endless sourcing they’ll do, stays as a reminder that sometimes plans change, things go awry and there’s not much you can do about it other than persevere - and that we did! So, here’s Bianca and Jana’s innermost thoughts about the trip, 3 years before it came to fruition, enjoy :) We've got our passports out and Jana has already picked out what she's going to wear each day… Come March [September] we'll be heading north with Air France to the Kingdom of Morocco, bright eyed and bushy tailed as we make our base in the ancient city of Marrakesh (also known as Marrakech to the French, but we're not French, so we'll go with the English version until all that fuss about Brexit is sorted out) - This turned into a year long negotiations trade, and now us outsiders would pay nearly double what we used to if we visit the UK - thankfully our flight is direct!! We'll be looking for inspiration and will be investigating what's there that we could possibly bring back to The Hoed. We can't wait to experience the atmosphere and afro-arabic influences of this amazing place as we visit the celebrated souks and off-the-beaten track artists and craftsmen that make Marrakesh so special. We're desperate to see the beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles, fabrics, rugs, carpets, objets d'art, accessories, lighting… anything that catches our eye and could possibly be brought back south. Berber mats and rugs are definitely on our list, as are the kind of furnishings you might find in a gorgeous Bedouin tent. If you think about it, the Bedouin refined the art of "glamping" into an artform - fabulous carpets on the ground, soft, billowing fabrics hung here and there, plump cushions spread on the ground, intricate leatherwork and carved wood, patinated metal… Total Glamping vibes! We just love all of it and will be tracking as much of it down as we can. We'll also have an eye or three out for wonderful ceramics and glassware and wonderful lamps that give off soft, filtered light. For us it's about workmanship, so we'll hopefully be finding the people who make furniture and ceramics using techniques that have been passed down over countless generations meaning that everything we look at will have its own, and its own special story. Our mission is to share those stories with you and, if it's feasible, bring some of that special workmanship home to the Rainbow Nation. We're most definitely inspired and are sure this is going to be a truly special trip! Counting the sleeps till then! Less than a month to go now - we will be keeping the updates going on our social channels as well as another few blog posts to explain in detail our wild adventures - Stay tuned!
