There are ceiling fans and then there are fans of interest
May 8, 2017
Even if you’re one of the fortunate few, lucky enough to have an air-conditioning system in your home, as fellow South Africans we understand the importance of saving electricity and thus, saving on your bill at month end! That’s why the humble fan may have to do at certain times and in certain circumstances, and are actually great for a few reasons:
  • They allow you to control the temperature room-by-room, where central AC systems do not
  • They are more energy efficient and eco-friendly
  • They have both functional and aesthetic uses
  • They help to save on your monthly electricity bill
The design of ceiling and standing fans has come a long way over the years, and today you are able to get your hands on some on-trend, super stylish variations to suit all pockets:

Contemporary fans

The ceiling style fan, either in a 6-blade or 4-blade configuration, is usually brushed with a sleek and modern aluminium finish to suite a contemporary style space, such as a home office, study or very modern kitchen.

Its standing counter-part is usually made from a hardened black and silver aluminium, and is also available in the oh-so on-trend copper or rose gold aluminium, best suited to industrial style spaces, outdoor patio areas or a masculine-style home office.

Traditional fans

While the traditional style fan may seem a bit out-of-date, it still serves its purpose and is often the most cost-effective model on the market. These fans are generally available in 100watt configurations with 6 or 4 blades, and a variety of colours such as matte white, matte black and matte beige.

However, in recent years the traditional style fan has undergone a facelift, now available in faux wood materials with different shaped blades, including bent, palm leaf and tear drop styles. These more modern, traditional fans are best suited to bedrooms, guest rooms and lounge rooms- creating a homely, welcoming feel.

Specialty fans

In today’s modern décor era, you can find almost anything you want for your home, to suit your taste and style – your budget, on the other hand, may need adjusting! Specialty fans include the likes of:
  • Fans with intricate, custom-designed light fittings and light shades
  • Ceiling fans with old-world, bamboo woven blades – ideal for outdoor entertainment areas
  • The Punkah ceiling or wall-mounted fan with wide, oval palm leaf- also ideal for outdoor and entertainment areas
  • Vertically rotating designed fans, also with gorgeous, woven palm leaf blades- perfect for lounge and outdoor entertainment areas
Selecting a fan for aesthetics is one thing, but make sure that you choose one with a good quality motor to ensure noise-free cooling. Also make sure the blades have been balanced for optimum operation and air flow.

Ceiling fans are available with various sized and number of blades, however the number of blades does not increase or decrease the amount of air being delivered by the fan, they are purely aesthetic.

Whether your fan is for practical purposes or to complete the styled theme of your new interior, be sure to shop around before you make your decision as the style of your fan can add a unique element to your space whether it be a desk fan or ceiling fan. From minimalist single-blade for modern living to a chandelier fan for the more traditional home, your choices are endless, and your nights will be cooler.

Back in March of 2020, Bianca and Jana were dusting off their Fez’s and grabbing the pashminas out of storage in preparation to Rock the Casbah! However, as we all know and vividly remember - with March, came the eventual Covid shutdown, and instead of frolicking down the Moroccan streets, we all shut ourselves inside and watched the days tick by… 3 Years later, and now we can finally say - with conviction - that they’re going to Morocco at the start of September! This blog, filled with excitement and curiosity about all the weird and wonderful curios they might find, and endless sourcing they’ll do, stays as a reminder that sometimes plans change, things go awry and there’s not much you can do about it other than persevere - and that we did! So, here’s Bianca and Jana’s innermost thoughts about the trip, 3 years before it came to fruition, enjoy :) We've got our passports out and Jana has already picked out what she's going to wear each day… Come March [September] we'll be heading north with Air France to the Kingdom of Morocco, bright eyed and bushy tailed as we make our base in the ancient city of Marrakesh (also known as Marrakech to the French, but we're not French, so we'll go with the English version until all that fuss about Brexit is sorted out) - This turned into a year long negotiations trade, and now us outsiders would pay nearly double what we used to if we visit the UK - thankfully our flight is direct!! We'll be looking for inspiration and will be investigating what's there that we could possibly bring back to The Hoed. We can't wait to experience the atmosphere and afro-arabic influences of this amazing place as we visit the celebrated souks and off-the-beaten track artists and craftsmen that make Marrakesh so special. We're desperate to see the beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles, fabrics, rugs, carpets, objets d'art, accessories, lighting… anything that catches our eye and could possibly be brought back south. Berber mats and rugs are definitely on our list, as are the kind of furnishings you might find in a gorgeous Bedouin tent. If you think about it, the Bedouin refined the art of "glamping" into an artform - fabulous carpets on the ground, soft, billowing fabrics hung here and there, plump cushions spread on the ground, intricate leatherwork and carved wood, patinated metal… Total Glamping vibes! We just love all of it and will be tracking as much of it down as we can. We'll also have an eye or three out for wonderful ceramics and glassware and wonderful lamps that give off soft, filtered light. For us it's about workmanship, so we'll hopefully be finding the people who make furniture and ceramics using techniques that have been passed down over countless generations meaning that everything we look at will have its own, and its own special story. Our mission is to share those stories with you and, if it's feasible, bring some of that special workmanship home to the Rainbow Nation. We're most definitely inspired and are sure this is going to be a truly special trip! Counting the sleeps till then! Less than a month to go now - we will be keeping the updates going on our social channels as well as another few blog posts to explain in detail our wild adventures - Stay tuned!
