Win with Kuku and turn fugly into FAB!
June 24, 2020

Is your sofa really sad? Is your settee a shocker? Has your sectional seen better days? Does your chaise give you malaise? Fear not, because you could be a winner in Kuku's latest zany competition...

We're on the hunt for the sleaziest sofa in Hoedspruit and we need you to help us find it. And when we do, the owner of said settee is going to win upholstery services worth a whopping R3000 in our marvelous, magnificent, one-of-a-kind FUGLY COUCH COMPETITION!

Nothing is too skanky when it comes to our latest competition, open to residents of Hoedspruit (and immediate surrounds). We want to see the worst of the worst, so post images of your truly awful couch on our social media platforms and let the judging begin!

You get to vote for the fugliest couch, the one you think is the most awful in terms of sadness, lack of style and all-round yuk... And the couch with the most votes wins its owner a fabulous make-over at Kuku's workshop with re-upholstery services up to the value of R3000 up for grabs.

You can supply your own fabric or take advantage of a whopping 20% discount on fabric from Kuku. We're throwing in free collection and delivery within a 20km radius of Hoedspruit!

The only rule is that the couch has to be in every-day use in your house and not abandoned in a darkened outbuilding with only goggas and rodents for company... No junkyard specials please!

The competition is open till 10 July 2020 so get posting! The Kuku team will then select three finalists for final voting and will cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie. The winner will be announced on 17 July 2020!

A "mystery prize" will also be up for grabs by a lucky voter... What is it? It's a mystery, that's what it is. If we told you we'd have to kill you. Or force you to sit on a fugly couch for a year.

If you win our FUGLY COUCH COMPETITION you'll be getting the services of our workshop upholsterers up to the value of R3000 (that's labour, time, effort and all that sort of stuff, for free!) but will need to provide (or buy) your own fabric. If you buy from us you'll get an automatic 20% discount, but how much fabric will you actually need?

For the average two-seater couch you'll be needing 12m of fabric, and for a three-seater, 14m. If you've got a Chesterfield (couch, not cigarette) you'll likely need around 15m. Wingbacks take up 7m and plain armchairs just 6m.

Remember, even if you don't win, reupholstering is the perfect option for refreshing the look and feel of your living areas and works out a lot cheaper than buying entirely new pieces. Turning sow's ears into silk purses is something of a speciality here at Kuku - we take the downright ghastly and make it gorgeous, giving old pieces of furniture a new lease on life.

Reupholstering is done in our Hoedspruit workshop (at the back of our showroom) by our talented team of staff, breathing new life into old, sagging couches, tired chairs and even items chewed to ribbons by wild animals (yes, we know how it gets when your guests, um, go large!)

So... What fabric could you be getting for your fugly couch? Even if you don't end up the winner of the competition, you can still take advantage of some wonderful options Kuku has in store.

Choosing the right fabric for the job is essential. We'll help, so don't worry, but here's an idea of your choices:

Cotton blend - Durable, inexpensive and resistant to wear, fading and piling but can be prone to staining and wrinkling. Best used for more formal furniture.

Leather or vinyl - Wears well and only gets better with age! Vinyl has a similar look and feel and is a bit more affordable.

Wool or acrylic - Durable, resistant to dirt, fading, piling and wrinkling. Acrylic is similar and a little softer.

Nylon and polyester - Hard-wearing, durable and resistant to wrinkling, soiling and fading. Blended with other fibres to increase longevity.

Another brilliant option is Home Fabrics' FibreGuard range of amazing easy to clean fabrics are not just practical and life-proof but also gorgeous to look at and sit on! And at 100,000 rubs on the Martindale abrasion scale they are the perfect option for safari lodges and camps as well as high wear-and-tear households. We recommend 20,000 rubs and above for couch fabric!

As well as being rub resistant, FibreGuard's special, stain-free tech lets you curl up on your couch or in your favourite armchair knowing that if your mayo-soaked sarmie slips out of your hand you're good. Or if that bottle of red you're slowly emptying tips over when you're trying to put the straw in your mouth it's not going to matter... And if the sprogs or dogs splatter it with mud (and other, adhesive, brown goo-type material) it's not going to stain.

Back in March of 2020, Bianca and Jana were dusting off their Fez’s and grabbing the pashminas out of storage in preparation to Rock the Casbah! However, as we all know and vividly remember - with March, came the eventual Covid shutdown, and instead of frolicking down the Moroccan streets, we all shut ourselves inside and watched the days tick by… 3 Years later, and now we can finally say - with conviction - that they’re going to Morocco at the start of September! This blog, filled with excitement and curiosity about all the weird and wonderful curios they might find, and endless sourcing they’ll do, stays as a reminder that sometimes plans change, things go awry and there’s not much you can do about it other than persevere - and that we did! So, here’s Bianca and Jana’s innermost thoughts about the trip, 3 years before it came to fruition, enjoy :) We've got our passports out and Jana has already picked out what she's going to wear each day… Come March [September] we'll be heading north with Air France to the Kingdom of Morocco, bright eyed and bushy tailed as we make our base in the ancient city of Marrakesh (also known as Marrakech to the French, but we're not French, so we'll go with the English version until all that fuss about Brexit is sorted out) - This turned into a year long negotiations trade, and now us outsiders would pay nearly double what we used to if we visit the UK - thankfully our flight is direct!! We'll be looking for inspiration and will be investigating what's there that we could possibly bring back to The Hoed. We can't wait to experience the atmosphere and afro-arabic influences of this amazing place as we visit the celebrated souks and off-the-beaten track artists and craftsmen that make Marrakesh so special. We're desperate to see the beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles, fabrics, rugs, carpets, objets d'art, accessories, lighting… anything that catches our eye and could possibly be brought back south. Berber mats and rugs are definitely on our list, as are the kind of furnishings you might find in a gorgeous Bedouin tent. If you think about it, the Bedouin refined the art of "glamping" into an artform - fabulous carpets on the ground, soft, billowing fabrics hung here and there, plump cushions spread on the ground, intricate leatherwork and carved wood, patinated metal… Total Glamping vibes! We just love all of it and will be tracking as much of it down as we can. We'll also have an eye or three out for wonderful ceramics and glassware and wonderful lamps that give off soft, filtered light. For us it's about workmanship, so we'll hopefully be finding the people who make furniture and ceramics using techniques that have been passed down over countless generations meaning that everything we look at will have its own, and its own special story. Our mission is to share those stories with you and, if it's feasible, bring some of that special workmanship home to the Rainbow Nation. We're most definitely inspired and are sure this is going to be a truly special trip! Counting the sleeps till then! Less than a month to go now - we will be keeping the updates going on our social channels as well as another few blog posts to explain in detail our wild adventures - Stay tuned!
